Shooting range question
Can anyone tell me if this is a standard / typical thing at shooting ranges .I've never shot at an indoor range before , always just went out on the back 40 *L* Just had my dad tell me that the range 1 town over from us has a policy that all brass is the property of the range no matter if it was brought in by you or bought from the range . Oh , you can also buy bulk used brass in their store in ziplock bags , *L* yes pay to shoot your ammo in their range and have to buy back your own brass from them if you want it back. This has changed my opinion on the shop quite a bit today , and yes its a shop many here shop at online as well .
Is it just me being out of the loop and this is a standard thing or what ? |
Re: Shooting range question
I've heard of it before, never frequented one that operates that way, but I have heard of a few doing that. Quite the scam if you ask me!

Re: Shooting range question
That is a positive NO. Theives are coming out of the wood work now that the SHTF. Stay away from them. If they cared about anyone it would be the gun owners.

Re: Shooting range question
It is not standard at the (few) indoor ranges I have been to. In fact, I actually saw a guy a few months ago ask the range operator if he could fill up a small bag with brass from the brass bucket, and the operator said it was fine.

Re: Shooting range question
I've also heard of some ranges having this kind of policy in place. It's their right to run their business however they see fit. It's your right to not give them any of your money if you don't agree with it or like it.

Re: Shooting range question
I've never shot at an indoor range but that sounds like BS to me! I've also heard of ranges that only let you shoot their ammo and then over charge you for it.

Re: Shooting range question
Wow. I sure don't like that policy. I would take my business elsewhere.
Take care, Mod1 |
Re: Shooting range question
If i owned a indoor range where range time and lanes were at a premium ...i wouldnt want people crawling round the floor picking up brass i can see that as being dangerous etc...also it would take away range time from others unless your paying for the range by the hour.. I always clean up and take away my own brass but it extremely rare for me to shoot on a indoor range.
now if i was shooting a revolver and could dump my brass right in my range bag every time i reloaded that would be effecient. i can see a range trying to sell and control the ammo brought into the range that would be a way to make sure all the ammo shot on the range was correct for the range's capacity to catch the bullets. could very well be a insurance requirement. dont need some idiot sneeking in a thompson contender shooting rifle ammo on a indoor pistol range. just some thoughts as to why they might be doing that I think it would be appropriate to ask them why they have those policys and make your decision before you jump to conclusions, with most proprietors its safty first and clients second |
Re: Shooting range question
Its probebly a rule but if you go there often its also ignored because your a friend.
I've heard Olin (Winchester) has a range in Alton Ill and if you shoot there the ammo has to be Winchester and you have to leave the brass. E-A |
Re: Shooting range question
It's been policy at a couple ranges I've been to.
They shouldn't mind if you pick up the ones at your feet. I can see how they wouldn't want people crawling around on the floor, and reaching into the lanes. Here, listen to some Ted Nugent, "Kiss my Glock" |
Re: Shooting range question
The policy of the indoor range I go to is; you must buy the ammo you shoot from them, as well as the targets and all the spent brass is theirs. They don't search your range bag to see if you're smuggling in ammo. I don't bitch, as it is a nice range, heated and air conditioned and they only let one person/party shoot at a time. Cheap too, $5/hr if you've bought the gun you're firing from them- they do look at what weapons you bring.
Nothing bigger than a .44 mag permitted and I had a complaint about shooting a .357 mag there once. I started with .38 spl and once I got in my groove, switched over to .357 mag. The rangemaster came in and asked what the hell I was shooting! |
Re: Shooting range question
I got one by my house you have to shoot their ammo
which is not that bad of a price its all reload and when your done you can take the brass or sell it back to them its America if you don't like the rules go somewhere else |
Re: Shooting range question
I would let them know that I had considered using their range on a regular basis, but after hearing about that poicy that I now won't spend a dime there - and then walk out.

Re: Shooting range question
I can understand , having to buy range supplied ammo for safety , some people might just push the edge on safety with home loads . I see keeping their own brass as well .Just don't agree with the bring your own ammo and we keep your brass .I have no plans on shooting there anyway , just wanted to see if it was a standard thing or just another way to pick up a little extra $ on their side . Sure most people may not reload so could care less about the brass , but anyway . Thanks for the info.

Re: Shooting range question
I'd only shoot my 22 rimfire there...let them keep the brass.....
Shoot a revolver and easily dump your brass in your bag.....this is a big advantage to revolvers. You guys should really look for a local club and join......ours is awesome....it has state of the art HEPA filtered heated/air conditioned.....has 24 hour access....I've shot at 2:00AM many times. We have a youth program...have 22 kids shooting 22LR. We have Bullseye, PPC, Combat and Bowling Pin. Each of these shoots once a week on a set evening. Join a club....best thing you can do. |
Re: Shooting range question
I've seen it, but it is not standards at most ranges I've been too...
The gun club I belong to has several brooms and dustpans in each section and a trashcan marked as brass... However, you can take your brass or leave it, they don't say anything either way... The money they get for the brass goes toward stuff for the range... As of the last few months, I've been taking all my spent centerfire brass and sorting them by caliber into 5 Gallon buckets... That way, if I deceide to reload, I'll have a bunch of brass to start with... |
